Is Your Website ADA Compliant? . . . AND Why It Is Important!
Something is currently going on and it’ll only be a matter of time before it gets to you or your agency!
Insurance agency website owners are being targeted and sued for a law they are ignorant of . . .
It’s the ‘ADA’ act which requires businesses to make accommodations for people with disabilities in ALL their web content.
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) focuses on four fundamental principles, which break down into actionable items:
  1. Perceivable: Everyone that visits your website should have the means to perceive all its information, like text, images, and video, whether directly or through an alternative option, like a transcript for a video. 
  2. Operable: All website visitors should have the ability to navigate your site and use its features. For example, no one should have issues using your main navigation, search bar, or additional tools, like a calculator. 
  3. Understandable: No one should have difficulty understanding your website and its content. Adding instructions for how to use a tool, for instance, helps everyone take advantage of your site and its features. 
  4. Robust: An ADA-compliant website must provide all site visitors with the same experience. For example, if you create a video transcript, that transcript should include the entire video versus bits and pieces.
​But How Do You Get Your Website to Be ADA Compliant?
  • Simple. If you are paying for a website, ask your Webmaster to handle it. (But don't pay extra. It should be included in your fee.)
  • If you handle your own website in-house, follow the guidelines at https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20/
  • You’ll have to go through TONS AND TONS of assets HOPING that you’ll get everything compliant on your site.

​THE CO$TLY $HAKEDOWN RACKET
Like all regulation, which is paved with good intention, predatory lawyers found a way to use the ADA law to extort money out of business owners who were not in compliance.
Recently, we began to see predatory practices.
One guy in Philadelphia has sued no less than 30 businesses for adequate parking, restrooms, and entrance ramps.
Eventually, it was realized that the ADA and state laws can be applied to local business websites, and law firms were off to the races to collect billable hours and settlements.
  • If the website couldn't be accessed with a screen reader for the blind…
  • If the color contrast on buttons couldn't be seen by color blind people...
And along with a million and a half reasons, attorneys saw dollar $igns.

Unfortunately, there are no hard rules, just follow these guidelines called the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

This is a long list of things your website needs to have.
